Step Into the Future: Join the 53rd Annual Nedbank & Old Mutual Budget Speech Competition

Following the successful 52nd Annual Nedbank & Old Mutual Budget Speech Competition which saw Sandile Mbatha and Hamzah Mia win the postgraduate and undergraduate competitions respectively, the countdown has begun for the world’s future leaders and thinkers to make their mark in the 53rd Nedbank & Old Mutual Budget Speech Competition. Entries opened on 21 February and will run until 31 July 2024, offering a stage for the most innovative minds to showcase their solutions for tomorrow.

As usual this year, the competition will explore issues that are not only academically stimulating but also of practical importance.

Undergraduate question: “Discuss the impact of public debt on government finances in developing economies, focusing on South Africa.” This question invites undergraduate students to explore the multifaceted effects of public debt and its ramifications on the economic stability and growth of developing nations, with a spotlight on South Africa.

Postgraduate question: “What are the prospects for medium-term economic growth in South Africa against the background of the possibility of a coalition government at a national government level?” Postgraduate students are challenged to analyse and predict the future economic trajectory of South Africa, considering the political landscape and the possibility of coalition governance.

As we commence the 53rd year of this competition, we stand on the brink of change, ready to be guided by the bright minds of our participants,” states Celiwe Ross, Director for Strategy, Sustainability, People and Public Affairs at Old Mutual. “This year, we challenge you to think beyond boundaries, to blend innovation with insight, and to propose solutions that pave the way for a sustainable and prosperous future.

“More than a contest, this competition is an opportunity to be part of an immensely important l dialogue, to influence policymakers, and to emerge as a future leader in economic thought. Winners receive recognition and a platform to develop professionally, as well as the chance to collaborate with industry experts as they kick off their professional lives,” says Khensani Nobanda, Nedbank Group Executive for Group Marketing and Corporate Affairs.
